River Courses for Stream Restoration Modeling
Upcoming Workshops
RC302: HEC-RAS for Stream Restoration
About the Workshop: This three (3) day workshop will cover applications of hydraulic modeling and its use to support stream restoration design work. Participants will gain experience with targeting and setting up a modeling effort, and the various types of analysis that can be used for improving stream restoration designs. The group will use real-world design examples to perform simulations and visualize results using HEC-RAS software and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
Participants will need to bring a laptop computer for spreadsheet and modeling applications. Getting the most out of this workshop will require attendees to have significant experience in hydraulic processes and stream morphology principles.

RC 303: Multi-Dimensional Modeling for Stream Restoration
About the Workshop: This three (3) day, online workshop will cover applications of two-dimensional hydraulic modeling and its use to support stream restoration design work. Participants will improve their skills with two-dimensional modeling using real-world stream restoration designs. The group will learn the latest advancements in HEC-RAS and get practical instruction on developing a project workflow and interpreting results.
Participants will need a laptop computer for spreadsheets and modeling applications. Getting the most out of this workshop will require attendees to have significant experience with HEC-RAS, hydraulic processes, and stream morphology principles.

Instructors
- Kris Bass, P.E.
- Kris Bass was a Water Quality Extension Associate at N.C. State University until the summer of 2003. His primary role involved providing engineering support for design and research projects at the department and Kris worked on a variety of water quality projects including stormwater, stream and wetland restorations, and watershed studies. Kris also has course and research experience with other types of constructed and restored wetlands, riparian buffers, drainage systems, and other water quality management practices. His current interests include advancing methods for stream and wetland restoration, watershed level application of water quality practices, and system approaches for stormwater treatment. In 2003, Kris started his own engineering firm, Kris Bass Engineering.
- Jack Kurki-Fox, Ph.D., PE
- Jack Kurki- Fox is a Research Scholar with the Biological & Agricultural Engineering Department at NC State University based in Raleigh, N.C. He has a PhD in Biological & Agricultural Engineering from NC State University and is a licensed professional engineer. He conducts monitoring, modeling and engineering analysis to support research and extension efforts related to water quality, flooding and water management. He supports training programs for professionals focused on stream morphology assessment, restoration and hydraulic modeling. He has conducted extensive modeling and analyses to identify flood mitigation options for communities in eastern NC, evaluate infrastructure improvements to increase resilience, and test the flood mitigation potential of natural infrastructure.
Professional Development Hours
- Based on previous workshops, it is estimated that the following professional development hours will be awarded after the successful completion of the workshop. For the exact professional development hours for this workshop, visit the workshop registration page.
- A certificate of attendance will be emailed after the workshop, listing these PDHs:
