Historical Engineering

Extension International Study Tours and Workshops

Much of today’s “modern” engineering and infrastructure have their roots in the engineering innovations of the Roman Empire. Roman Engineering Professor, Dr. Bill Hunt, hosts annual study tours of Roman infrastructure marvels in Italy, Spain and France. These 5-day programs visit some of the most famous Roman sites in history including Roman aqueducts, bridges, cisterns, reservoirs, theaters, amphitheaters, roads, towns and temples.

Dr. Hunt is an enthusiast of “awesome engineering achievements” and can’t wait to share his love and knowledge of Roman engineering with you.

Roman Engineering of Provence France Webinar

ONLINE
December 13, 2024

Roman Provence was so named by Julius Caesar, as this region of southern France was considered the province of Rome. As such, some of the greatest works of Roman engineering are found in this delightful region that connected Italy to the Iberian peninsula. Dotting the Provincial landscape are such engineering wonders as the Pont du Gard (considered to be the best ancient aqueduct on earth), the amphitheater of Nimes (again thought, by many, to be the best preserved Roman amphitheater), and the theatre of Orange (widely viewed as the best remaining Roman theatre of Western Europe). In between these landmarks are cool bridges, water distribution systems, triumphal arches, and Roman ramparts.
Come join Romano-phile Bill Hunt as we virtually explore the Roman engineering wonders of Southern France as you prepare for the holidays, and perhaps you’ll even get the itch to join NC State in Provence in Fall 2025.
